THOUGHT: Training

You want to play the guitar? You're going to have to practice--a lot! You have to work hard to get good at something. Paul likens the Christian life to training for a race.

Note: When Paul mentions "shadowboxing" in this passage, he's talking about beating the air meaninglessly--not about gluing construction paper art into a shoebox to display at the fourth grade open house.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (New Living Translation)

24 Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! 25 All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. 26 So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. 27 I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.

A trained athlete is disciplined and efficient, they don't waste their energy in meaningless pursuits. How can you become more disciplined and purposeful in your Christian life?
